Cats and dogs are more comfortable in their own homes. Staying in an unfamiliar place can be very stressful for a pet, especially if it’s a boarding facility where many other animals are present.
Kennels can be loud with other dog and cat vocalizations (barking, meowing, whining). They’re sometimes stinky if pet waste isn’t removed immediately. Cats and dogs both have a very sensitive sense of smell. Smells from the other animals and pet waste may add to stress.
Staying in another home may also be stressful. It’s still a strange place with many new smells and possibly other animals. Some easy-going pets are just fine with this, but many sensitive pets can be overwhelmed with a sudden change in environment, especially when their humans are suddenly gone.
Physical health is another consideration. There is always a risk of contracting an illness or disease when pets are together with other animals. Errors in sanitation and close contact between pets can allow illness to spread. Vaccinations are not always 100% effective in preventing disease.
These are all things to consider when making care plans for a pet. A conscientious and loving in-home pet sitter who adheres to pet schedules and routines can ease the stress pets experience when their humans go on a trip, and can keep them safe and healthy.
